How pregnancy weeks are counted

Pregnancy is counted from the first day of your last period, not from conception — so you're already "4 weeks pregnant" at the time of a missed period. That's why a full-term pregnancy is 40 weeks, even though the baby has been growing for about 38.

Weeks are grouped into trimesters: first (weeks 1–13), second (14–27) and third (28–40). Each has its own scans and tests — the tool above tells you what's coming next.

Questions, answered

Why does the calculator say I'm 4 weeks pregnant when I just found out?

Because pregnancy is dated from the first day of your last period, about two weeks before you actually conceived. A positive test around your missed period already puts you at roughly 4 weeks.

When will I feel the baby move?

Usually between 18 and 22 weeks for a first pregnancy, often earlier (16–18 weeks) in later pregnancies. Regular kick-counting starts around 28 weeks — try our kick counter.

When do the trimesters start and end?

First trimester: weeks 1–13. Second: weeks 14–27. Third: week 28 until birth. Each trimester has its own routine scans and tests.

Is the week from my scan different from this calculator?

It can be. Ultrasound dating, especially in the first trimester, is more accurate than period dates. If your scan gives a different date, your doctor will use the scan.
